I just got a western digital 1 tb portable external harddrive and jaws won't read the software that comes with the drive. How Am I suppose to lock the drive if I can't use the software. Do I have to return the drive and get a different one? If so which drive does jaw read?

Software with these drives is not necessary. Plug it up and windows sees it under my computer, or computer if windows 7. You use it just like your C drive, so no need for the rest. I don't know what letter it will be, but look at the my computer, or computer section and see what's their, then plug it up and you'll see the new letter.

Yes I know that but I need the software to set a password and lock the drive for safety.

No idea about the wd thing, but if you want to encrypt the drive you could always use something like
True Crypt
to make an encrypted partition

I want to use the entire drive so I want to use a password and also lock it. That is a very good idea if I can't solve my problem.

Oops, my bad. You don't nessesarally have to partition the drive, you can encrypt the whole thing.
